Man shot near Soquel Drive
SOQUEL - A man was shot four or five times Monday night in Soquel Village with what authorities suspect was a pellet or BB gun.
The man, whose identity was not immediately released, was flown to a Bay Area trauma center because the wounds were consistent with a small-caliber handgun and medics were not immediately sure about the severity of the wounds, sheriff's Sgt. Mike MacDonald said. The man suffered injuries to his face, torso and arm.
Although the man told deputies he got into a tangle with gang members, MacDonald said it was difficult to piece together exactly what happened because the man was intoxicated. The man walked several blocks away from the scene, bleeding from the head.
"He couldn't provide a statement that made sense," MacDonald said.
The incident unfolded about 6:50 p.m. in the 4700 block of Soquel Drive.
A 13-year-old boy from Soquel said he was walking home from karate class when he heard a commotion in the bushes underneath the Soquel Drive bridge over Soquel Creek. He said he smelled marijuana then heard several shots from what sounded like a BB gun.
He said an injured man emerged from the brush, followed by another man who then began punching the victim.
"He started beating him, hitting him hard," the boy said, adding that the injured man was saying "Stop, please stop."
The boy asked to use the phone at an area gas station to call police, but said he was refused. He went home to tell his father, Lee Purkey, who drove the boy back to the scene to talk to deputies. Purkey said the incident won't keep him from letting his son walk home.
"It's a good town," he said, adding that he was disappointed the creek area had been the scene of violence. "It's not OK."
The victim was in his 30s. He was wearing jeans, work boots and a white T-shirt.
Deputies are looking for at least two men, one described as a 6-foot-tall, medium build white male in his 20s wearing a maroon T-shirt with cutoff sleeves and blue jeans. A second suspect is described as a white male in his 20s wearing mostly black.
Deputies ask anyone with information about the case to call the sheriff's office at 471-1121.
