Philanthropist admired for business acumen, wisdom, generosity

Whether she was helping a family enterprise grow into an international company or advising leaders in the nonprofit community, Sheila Potiker had the business acumen, insight and laserlike focus to help organizations reach their goals.

She and her late husband started a business creating entertainment discount books from the kitchen table of their Detroit home in the 1960s. By the 1990s, the Potikers had become philanthropists, relocated to La Jolla and eventually went on to fund a senior residence project, a theater and the acquisition of a historical ship for the San Diego Maritime Museum.

Mrs. Potiker died June 13 after a short illness. She was 81.

“She blessed us all with her wisdom and her generosity,” said Marjory Kaplan, CEO of the Jewish Community Foundation. The foundation was one of many organizations that benefited from her involvement, Kaplan said.

“She was quite a role model for so many of us. She was such a kind and beautiful person. She applied such great strategy and entrepreneurial skills to the nonprofit world,” Kaplan said. “She had the ability to zero in on what really mattered.”

Friends and family said Mrs. Potiker was pragmatic and focused, as well as warm and thoughtful. “She was chair (of the Jewish Community Foundation) during our 40th anniversary and we rented out the Museum of Man,” Kaplan said. “She positioned herself at the door and said hello to everybody who came and we had more 300 people. Someone else might have gone to be with their friends … she was just the perfect hostess.”

Mrs. Potiker served on many boards including the San Diego Museum of Art, the La Jolla Playhouse and Senior Community Centers. In addition to her generous financial contributions, Mrs. Potiker provided valuable insight and wise counsel, said Paul Downey, CEO of Senior Community Centers. “She and her late husband shared our vision for a 200-unit building for low-income seniors. Without their gift and commitment to us, we wouldn’t have the Potiker Family Senior Residence,” Downey said. “She was one of the giants of philanthropy in this community.”

Mrs. Potiker joined the Museum of Art’s board of trustees in February 2008, and by June of that year she had been elected to the executive board. “That doesn’t happen very often,” said fellow trustee Ellen Whelan. “She was fully committed and so dynamic. She had a combination of candor and diplomacy that I found unique. She gave her time and her wisdom and she was always wonderfully to the point. And she had a sense of humor. She contributed in so many ways.
