Cuba: Seas to Rise More Than 30 Inches by 2100
Cuban scientists have calculated that sea levels around the middle of the Caribbean nation will rise by more than 30 inches by the end of the century because of global climate change, state media said Friday.
The models predict the sea will rise 10.6 inches (27 centimeters) in 2050, and 33.5 inches (85 centimeters) in 2100, Abel Centella, Scientific Director Institute of Meteorology of the country, was quoted by the Communist Party Granma as saying.
There were no details on what the island is preparing for company, but Granma said that scientists are closely monitoring the sea level.

"Right now it is urgent to preserve the mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass beds and sandy beaches," Hernandez has been quoted as saying. "Each of these ecosystems is a natural barrier to defend the coasts of the impact of climate change. If they deteriorate, the consequences will be worse. "
Of international scientific studies have projected sea levels will rise between 30 and 75 inches (190 centimeters) by century's end, fed by melting glaciers and ice caps.
The increases are not uniform throughout the world because of currents, winds and other factors.
