SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The California Department of Food and Agriculture said on Monday the horses that participated in the National Cutting Horse Association's Western National Championships in Ogden have been cleared of Equine Herpes Virus-1.
"We owe the success of this project in part to the outstanding isolation biosecurity measures implemented by horse facility managers, show/event managers and other professionals who work with and care for horses," state veterinarian Dr. Annette said. CDFA officials said the recent disease outbreak of the neuropathogenic strain of EHV-1 is over due to the fact that it has been 14 days since the last clinical case was confirmed. "I want to thank California's horse owners and veterinarians for their prompt and thorough actions to isolate and monitor exposed animals and contain this outbreak of EHV-1," Whiteford said. Although California has been cleared of the outbreak, CFDA officials and veterinarians said owners must remain vigilant in caring for their horses because the risk of disease is higher when animals commingle in one place.
