Georgetown High bridging gap in student achievement

Georgetown High School is closing the achievement gap between students who are economically disadvantaged and those who are not.

The pre-K through 12th-grade school made such a big leap that it is in the running as possibly being labeled a Title I Distinguished School in Louisiana.

This week, Louisiana Department of Education officials visited the Grant Parish school to review and observe it. It was one of 10 schools that could potentially be named one of the state's two Title I Distinguished Schools, a DOE spokeswoman said.

Paula Crawford, supervisor for secondary education for the Grant Parish School District, said she did not even know the school was up for a potential award.

She said the school and district were simply honored to receive a site visit from state officials.

"This is wonderful," she said.

The school made large strides in addressing its economically disadvantaged students.

According to the Department of Education, Georgetown High School improved the scores of its economically disadvantaged students by 9.7 points.

That subgroup of students improved from a 78.9 in 2005-2006 to a 88.6 in 2006-2007.

State officials said Georgetown High School was one of the top 10 Title I schools in Louisiana to show improvement over two school years in closing the achievement gap between subgroups in English and math.

Officials said the gap in English closed completely, and the math gap was reduced by .7 points.

The state's Department of Education Accountability Section ran data to determine which schools had significantly closed the achievement gap or had high academic achievement for over two years, according to information provided by Cheryl Michelet, state Department of Education spokeswoman.

The criteria is established by the U.S. Department of Education for recognition as a Title I Distinguished School.

Louisiana officials have selected five schools in each category and will select one from each category to represent the state.

The two schools selected will be recognized at the National Association of Title I Directors Conference in Tennessee in January.

Crawford said the school has not only improved the achievement gap but also showed the top growth among all Grant Parish schools, improving its School Performance Score by 9.8 points.

She said it is a community school that not only has parents but community members involved in events at the school, which is important for student achievement.

SRA Corrective Reading Program | Kanawha County Elementary Special ...

We started the year with the new on-line SRA progress monitoring.  After several attempts and many e-mails, all of our elementary schools using SRA were reporting, but teachers and principals felt that the reports were not beneficial for elementary schools.  We already had the DIBELS progress monitoring and should be using it with almost all of our K-3 students. Many teachers have had continued success with the SRA Decoding Program. In March, Cathy Burner, our SRA consultant returned for observations and coaching. She sent a status report that I shared with you in an e-mail. We are hosting an SRA Summer Bash to support fidelity to the program and will offer new training and refresher courses throughout the year.
