Afghanistan stories: Written at risk, edited with care

From her condo in North County, local writer Barbara Field can look into the corners of Afghanistan that don’t always see the light of our news-cycle day.

Like many of us in this military town, Field thought she had absorbed enough images and information to give her a clear mental picture of this war-wrenched country. Then she began hearing from the women who live there, and a whole new universe came into focus.

Field is a volunteer with the Afghan Women’s Writing Project, which pairs women in Afghanistan with female mentors in the United States for online writing workshops. The resulting poems, stories and essays — many of them written at great risk, all of them edited with great care — are posted on the group’s website

(awwproject.org ). And when the women behind the burqas step out of the shadows, the rest of us get an illuminating look at life beyond the headlines.

“The most surprising thing was the normalcy,” Field said. “I watch TV and I read the newspaper, so I think I know what’s going on over there, but I am still so surprised by the everyday-ness of what they write about. They write about injustice and they write about being married off to men double or triple their ages, but they also write about ice cream, and about their schools and their families.

“They are not spokespeople for Afghanistan, but by writing about their lives, they are really telling us everything about Afghanistan.”

Founded two years ago by Brooklyn journalist and novelist Masha Hamilton, the Afghan Women’s Writing Project has worked with more than 100 writers and mentors. The women do all of their writing and editing via email in three secure online classrooms.

The organization also pays for the Women’s Writing Hut, a safe workshop space somewhere in Kabul. It is all in the service of the group’s motto: “To tell one’s story is a human right.”

In this time of constant tweeting and compulsive Facebook over-sharing, it is easy to forget what a precious commodity communication can be. But after years of suffering under suffocating and punitive Taliban laws, the women of Afghanistan never forget that speaking out is a right that should feel like a privilege. And after reading them, their mentors won’t forget, either.

“(This project) changes the way you look at every single thing. Taking a shower. Going to the market. Meeting your sister’s fiance, whom she chose for herself,” said Field, who manages communication and metrics for UC San Diego’s department of business and financial services.
