MIKE KOGAN: "MANAGEMENT IS UNDERSTANDING YOUR ATHLETE"

"I think a lot of times the concept of a manager is overstated by a lot of people in this business. They try to be it all; I'm going to get you sponsorships and I'm going to get you this and that and I'm going to do this for you and that for you. They oversell themselves and most of the time, they don't deliver and then they end up going their separate ways or they end up with an unhappy athlete. The thing is when you manage an athlete, your job is not to, I'm not saying you can't get them sponsorship or do this or that, but mostly management is understanding your athlete and knowing him and understanding what he wants to do and where he wants to go. And then understanding this industry and then trying to guide where he wants to go," stated MMA manager Mike Kogan as he explained his relationship with former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion King Mo Lawal and UFC Hall of Famer Royce Gracie. PC: How is everything going Mike?

MK: Everything is good. We got Mo here at AKA and he's training hard and doing his thing. July will almost be a year, so we're hoping to get it in for sure. I'm excited to see him back.

PC: King Mo is probably one of the most athletic and talented fighters in MMA; definitely one of the most decorated wrestlers. What do you think he needs to improve on at this stage of the game?

MK: You know what? His last fight didn't go as planned against Feijao and there are some adjustments being made, but a lot of it was he was handicapped. He was injured in the Gegard fight and kinda rushed through and took the fight against Feijao. If I had anything to do with it at the time, I probably wouldn't have let him take it and just let him have the ACL surgery. Of course I wasn't his manager then, and I hate to sound like I'm making excuses because I'm not taking anything away from Feijao. I'm not saying the outcome would have been different, but you've got one of the best power wrestlers in MMA today unable to shoot, you know what I mean? You don't even have to take my word for it; in 3 rounds, the guy doesn't even take one shot. It wasn't because he was trying out his kickboxing; it's because he couldn't shoot. So a lot of the game plan kinda didn't go as planned.
