Heat-related illness cases on the rise

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) There are serious consequences that can result from people not taking proper care of themselves in the heat, but there are steps to take that could save a life. Even when the temperatures decrease slightly, people are still at risk. Kids, the elderly, those without air conditioning and those who work outside are most at risk.

This season, Conway Medical Center has seen five cases of heat exhaustion but no actual heat stroke cases yet. Doctors say from now until August they will probably see about one to two cases of heat-related illness each week. Grand Strand Regional did not release their numbers. July and August are the peak months for these types of illnesses. Doctors say people should keep up fluid intake, take frequent breaks from the heat and wear sunscreen and protective clothing. Health experts stress the importance of drinking water. Dr. Edward King, Director of Patient Education at Conway Medical Center says, "You can lose a lot of your body water through perspiration so you have to maintain adequate fluid intake particularly athletes, football camp, baseball camp-they have to maintain adequate fluid intake." Barrera says, "Yesterday it was probably a hair bit hotter but there was no wind when there was supposed to be, and today we actually have a little breeze...every couple degrees makes a big difference." Barrera said in his business he has to stay constantly busy, but there is a health concern so listening to your body and knowing when enough is enough is vital to staying well.
