Tracking Dance Injuries
According to the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, about 40,000 Americans are either professional dancers or choreographers. Dancing is a physically demanding activity. In fact, researchers report dancers have about the same level of risk for injury as football players. Injury risk increases with the level, intensity and duration of practice and performance. Hard floors, cold studios, the type of shoes and equipment, body alignment, prior history of injury and nutritional deficiencies also increase a dancer’s risk for injury. Dance injuries are most commonly caused by overuse, and are often precipitated by dancing from a young age and performing repetitive movements in extreme ranges of motion. Most injuries affect the lower extremities. The impact of twisting and jumping puts pressure on the knees, and can cause tears in the cartilage or meniscus. An article in the journal, Dance Magazine, reports nearly all dancers get at least one ankle sprain. Many of them have more than one incident. Hamstring pulls, hip pain and back injuries are also common. At the University of South Florida, professors of dance and physical therapy have collaborated and developed the "Dancer Wellness Project." Physical therapy students are learning how to screen college dance students for potential problems (like muscle imbalance or poor pelvic alignment) that can increase risk for injury. Dance Professor Merry Lynn Morris, M.F.A., says the dancer assessment looks at eight different areas of fitness: aerobic capacity, upper and lower body strength, core strength, hamstring strength, low back flexibility, lower limb external rotation, body composition and balance. Luckily, with Andrew Miller ‘s recent promotion, the Red Sox can afford to be cautious with their young potential ace, while still boasting a solid rotation 1-5. Assuming Buchholz misses a start or two (which seems likely), this would give the Red Sox would an opportunity to evaluate Miller at the big league level without having to shuffle Tim Wakefield in and out of the bullpen. If they decide to push back his next start a few days, it makes the most sense to start him at some point during their series in Pittsburgh. If they decided to push his start back any further, it’d probably make more sense for them to just DL him; thus clearing a roster spot.
Over Buchholz’s last eight starts, he’s really hit a groove going 4-0 with a 2.57 ERA and a 43/13 K/BB ratio in 49 innings.
