The Karinthy Connection with Mel Bampton

In 1929, Hungarian writer and poet Frigyes Karinthy wrote a short story called "Chains".

Few people know of the book or the author but you would know the phrase he coined, "six degrees of separation".

This is The Karinthy Connection.

Lucky Oceans ended last week's segment with Tom Waits, so author, broadcaster and music facilitator Mel Bampton kicked off this week with a band from California best known for their rather absurd lyrics and distinct style of bass-playing known as slap-bass.

The story goes that when Primus were recording their third album, Sailing the Seas of Cheese, which was their first album on a major label, they were searching desperately for someone to be the voice of the song's main character 'Tommy The Cat' . The man who was the brains of the operation, Les Claypool, lobbied the head of Warner records to call Tom Waits. He did and not long later Tom Waits left a message on Les's answering machine, agreeing to be the voice of this strange character. As a result, Tom Waits was introduced to a whole new generation.

Primus are managed by Redlight Management in the United States, which is a massive agency with scores of artists, one of whom is Herbie Hancock.  In 1998 Primus and Herbie Hancock took the same DJ out on the road. That DJ was DJ Disk who started Rocksteady Crew and Invisibl Scratch Picklz. DJ Disk also formed another outfit called El Stew which featured a man called Brain, also from Primus.

When Herbie Hancock's Rockit album was being recorded in the early eighties, a young man called Michael Beinhorn was in the studio working his way into the world of recording. He was the studio assistant and this album launched his production career. He produced some of the greatest grunge records of the nineties, has produced all of Courtney Love's albums and produced The Red Hot Chili Peppers album Mother's Milk , during which he actually fired the band's lead singer Anthony Keidis. On that record the band included a cover of Stevie Wonder's classic Higher Ground .
