Healthy and Fit: Getting Ready for a Century Bike Ride
While Salt Lake is celebrating the Utah Arts Festival this weekend, some Utah residents are gearing up for a weekend in Logan at the Bike MS: Harmon’s Best Dam Ride, a 100-mile (or century) ride through Cache Valley that begins on Saturday morning with an opportunity to camp and rest that evening, and then re-commences and ends on Sunday. The ride is celebrating its 25th anniversary and while we can’t imagine what it would be like to ride a bicycle for 100 miles, we thought it would be good to find out from one of the experts how you can get century-ride ready in case you want to pick up a bike and get cycling. Denise Druce is a hot mom who has been teaching fitness for 30 years. She currently teaches at 24 Hour Fitness and will be riding in Bike MS as the facility’s team captain. In addition to cycling, Druce teaches yoga, boot camp, step and weights and works as a personal trainer, teaches up at the University of Utah and is a Master Trainer for Schwinn Cycling. I was a dancer when I was younger, and started teaching aerobics (on green shag carpeting with leg warmers) in 1981. I owned a health club (Anatomy Academy in the Triad Center) and in the early ’90s,when Johnny G first introduced “Spinning,” we jumped on it. It wasn’t until 2000 that I first got on a real bike as an adult and hit the real road. I rode with a couple of other teams in years past and had a blast, but it was always difficult for me to recruit people from my classes to ride with me. Having a team jersey with the name of the club you belong to makes more sense, I think. So, I started asking around and learned that 24 Hour Fitness supports teams riding for charity. I called our national team captain, Roland Hoffman, and he gladly allowed me to form a team in Utah. This will be our fourth year riding as Team 24 Hour Fitness Utah! Last year I was awarded “Team 24 Leader of the Year.” I think the most important thing a rider can do is get time in the saddle. A fit person who exercises on a regular basis has strong legs and good endurance already, but that doesn’t help the hardest thing about a long ride ... which is sitting in that hard, little saddle for hours. I begin to do more indoor cycling in March each year, and try to get out on the road more when the good weather hits.
