Hard-rocking HedrusH lands Rum Runners gig

HedrusH -- a new Erie hard-rock band with veteran musicians -- plays some of Gary Tagliente's favorite songs of the '70s, '80s and '00s.

Whoops, what about the '90s?

What about it, Tagliente responds. That decade he can live without.

"I like new metal. I liked the '80s," Tagliente said. "I hated the '90s. The '90s was all crap."

So, HedrusH focuses on music from other eras. You'll hear Ted Nugent, ZZ Top, Tom Petty and Rush, for instance. The group also covers more recent artists -- Shinedown, Nickleback, Seether, Godsmack. They even do a small dose of country (Jason Aldean, Big and Rich).

Tagliente started HedrusH after a brief acoustic detour didn't pan out for the same reason he skips the '90s.

"I pretty much hated playing acoustic. So, that ended," he said.

Later, Tagliente met up with bassist Tim Gaber, who formerly played in Slam Corps and Higgledy Piggledy. They learned that Howie Shaw -- who had played in Higgledy Piggledy with Gaber, and before that Chunk -- was back in Erie. Shaw lived in Arizona for nearly three years, playing hard rock with Black Metal Box. That original band was doing well; it had a European tour booked. Then Shaw moved back to Erie for family reasons.

He was receptive to joining HedrusH because he goes way back with Gaber and Tagliente.

"I used to roadie for (Tagliente) when he was in Mars, back in the day," Shaw said. "I used to watch him get on the school bus for McLane. I was probably in fifth or sixth grade; he was a senior. He had long black hair. I was like, 'Whoa. That dude's cool.'"

"Now he doesn't think the same," cracked Tagliente.

Shaw knew immediately the new lineup would click.

"They all had played in good bands," he said. "I was shocked when I went over the first time and they were practicing because they were tight and just very good. They already knew the music, so I just walked in and sang. I knew three-quarters of the songs."

It was Shaw's idea to add Shinedown and new Alice in Chains. Drummer Kurt Alexander, formerly of Hear No Evil, even coaxed Tagliente into adding a few '90s songs by Matchbox Twenty, among others.

"Kurt picked a lot of them, all the '90s songs, because I never even heard of any of those," Tagliente said.

That kind of no-bull spirit pervades HedrusH. All four members have been around long enough to know they're playing for fun, not fame or to appear on "America's Got Talent." They just want to rock -- and rock you.
