'Sunny' show sprouts up in Evesham
EVESHAM — Tykes may recognize a local playground and neighborhood friends on national television.
A production crew for “The Sunny Side Up Show,” on the Sprout channel, filmed Friday at the Evesham Memorial Sports Complex on Tuckerton Road.
More important to the preschool set, they had the opportunity to meet Chica the Chicken.
Friday’s filming produced a musical video that will be used to promote the show. The segment features “Squeak With Chica,” an original song, and a dance that mimics a strutting chicken flapping its wings.
Between 30 and 40 local children participated in the video shoot and will likely be seen on Sprout in the near future, according to Nick Italiano, manager of the township’s recreation programs.
“I recruited them from all over town,” Italiano said.
There were some professional actors on the outdoor set, but the Evesham residents were voluntary participants. They included children ages 5 and 6 enrolled in the township’s Triple-A KinderPlay program.
Catering to young viewers 2 to 5 and their caregivers, Sprout’s programming airs locally on PBS, Comcast Digital and DirecTV.
“The Sunny Side Up Show” airs weekday mornings from 9 to noon and is broadcast live from the show’s Philadelphia studios.
Four alternating hosts accompany the Chica the Chicken puppet. They interact with young viewers, such as sharing birthday greetings and “fun facts,” and introduce programs that air between segments, including “Play With Me Sesame” and “Barney & Friends.”
Promotional videos for the show typically are taped in advance. Center City Film and Video of Philadelphia assisted Sprout on Friday’s shoot.
Kate Webster, productions manager for Sprout, said location scouts had visited a number of sites in New Jersey and Pennsylvania in search of the ideal place to film. A parent tipped the crew to the Evesham site.
Videos were taped at the Marlton Playground’s wood structure, on a dirt road in the complex, and on one of the athletic fields. Sprout representatives said the site was chosen for its unique elements and scenery options.
“We were looking for lots of variety,” Webster said.
In addition to outdoor shots, the film crew had access to the indoor recreation center, in case of rain. Instead, a basketball court was used to provide refuge from the heat. Fresh fruit, vanilla wafers, beverage pouches, bottled water, and other refreshments for the children also were kept cooler inside.
