You can do both these things, if you live in some parts of the country. But the jury is still out on whether the business model of deep discounts to the coupon crowd can be maintained. Thinking about how Expedia has changed the travel industry and how the Kindle has changed the publishing industry, it isn’t a stretch to say advertising is undergoing a sort of identity crisis.

One thing that will never change, however, is your relationship with your customer. If you don’t carefully manage those customer relationships, they could be damaged by those other changes.

The latest Forrester research report on marketing, “Competitive Strategy in the Age of The Customer,” makes the bold statement that, “only the customer-obsessed company can survive” in this age of the customer. The report maintains that if you believe you need to enhance your knowledge of and your engagement with your customers, then you will reassess the way you do research, service, sales, and advertising.

Let’s begin with the idea of the customer as the focal point of what you do.

The phrase, “The customer is always right” is still true, but the scope of what that means has vastly expanded.
