Hair ye! Hair ye! Staten Island stylist is a cut above
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — In March, Tabatha Coffey of Bravo TV’s “Tabatha’s Salon Takeover” judged what was dubbed a “hair-raising event,” along with Dina Manzo of “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” and Elvis Duran of Z100, at Rab’s Country Lanes, Dongan Hills.“The Higher the Hair, the Closer to God” was presented by “My Big Gay Italian Wedding,” the Off-Broadway production starring Grant City resident Anthony Wilkinson, and the event was hosted by Ron Corning of News 12 Long Island.
The contest, inspired by the production, drew submissions from more than 300 hairstylists in the tri-state area — with the winning stylist to be awarded $5,000 and a walk-on role in “My Big Gay Italian Wedding.”
The rules: Contestants were required to create an innovative, modern, high, big, trendy hair style/theme for use in the show. The semifinals, in which contestants sashayed on the runway and spectators voted for their favorite coif, naturally evoked much hilarity.
Note that Tabatha guest-starred in “My Big Gay Italian Wedding” at the St. Luke’s Theatre, Manhattan, to perform the wedding ceremony of Anthony and Andrew. On hand were a number of salons who worked diligently to compete for the much-coveted monetary award and onstage spot in the production.
Word has now reached us that Michael Mortensen, a super hairstylist at Visage Hair Studio, Grant City, won the contest and was awarded the $5,000 grand prize and the walk-on role in “My Big Gay Italian Wedding.”
Michael recounts that 300 submissions were winnowed to 30 semifinalists and 12 finalists. He adds that there were so many votes between him and someone from a Long Island salon, they were actually competing one-on-one on stage May 26.
“There was a stylist with their model from Long Island, and myself with [model] Mary McGinnis,” said Michael. It was a showdown, and both had lines and roles in the play.
At the end of the production, Tabatha had the final say and recapped the kickoff event at Rab’s Country Lanes, clarifying the contest, “The Higher The Hair, the Closer To God,” and its rules.
Michael exclaims: “It was then that she turned to Mary and me and said, ‘Now this is some big hair,’ and crowned me as the winner and awarded me $5,000.”
