Crews launch air assault on Flagler fire, rain helps somewhat in Volusia

BUNNELL -- Fire officials launched an aggressive air assault Friday on the Espanola fire in western Flagler County while crews also pressed forward on the ground to keep the massive fire from advancing toward high-tension electrical distribution lines.

Three Army National Guard Blackhawk helicopters and two fixed-wing tanker planes were dispatched Friday to try to get a handle on the Espanola blaze, which has burned more than 5,000 acres so far, according to Florida Division of Forestry spokesman Todd Schroeder.

"We're hitting it hard and we're throwing a lot of equipment at it from the air and we're hitting it early," Schroeder said.

A string of evening showers gave some hope for a long-awaited assist from Mother Nature, but in Flagler most of the showers were south of Bunnell -- and even there, only about an inch fell.
