THEN AND NOW: El Monte Legion Stadium was a happening place

Memories of El Monte.

The El Monte Legion Stadium provided plenty of fond memories for Southland residents, from the time it first opened in 1927 until it closed in 1973.

Historically, Legion Stadium is now remembered for its weekly music concerts. A selected list of performers who appeared on the stadium stage includes (in alphabetical order) Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Eddie Cochran, Sam Cooke, Spade Cooley, Fats Domino, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Otis, Jim Reeves, Tex Ritter, Merle Travis, Ike and Tina Turner, Ritchie Valens and Stevie Wonder.

But it's worth noting that the building started out as a venue for athletic events.

Originally, the building, on the corner of Valley Boulevard and Ramona Avenue, was the auditorium/gymnasium for El Monte Union High School. The high school was built on that site in the early 1900s, but by the 1920s school officials saw the need for a multi-purpose building on campus.

Construction began in 1926 and the building was ready for the 1927-28 school year. Before its construction, El Monte High, like most high schools in the area, held its basketball games on outdoor courts.

The addition of the arena gave El Monte's basketball program a big boost, and by the 1930s the Lions were one of the more formidable foes in the CIF, and remained so into the 1960s.

The facility was also used for wrestling matches in the 1932 Olympics, and appeared to have a bright future as a community gathering place.

Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other ideas. The Long Beach earthquake in the spring of 1933 damaged large portions of the El Monte campus and forced school officials to rebuild on the current Tyler Avenue site. The rest of the old campus was eventually torn down, leaving only the auditorium standing. It was used for basketball games on into the 1930s, but eventually fell into disuse, especially once World War II broke out.

In 1945, the school district sold the "white elephant" and surrounding land to El Monte American Legion Post 261. Post officials felt it would be a lucrative site for rentals, in addition to American Legion events.

In fact, they saw it as a new Hollywood Legion Stadium. That facility had become the premier site for boxing and wrestling matches in L.A. and proved quite a money-maker for its parent American Legion post.

El Monte Legion Stadium never developed in quite that way.
