She knew the pain of abuse. Vicki Riordan, 64, of Mechanicsburg, escaped domestic violence when her two boys were young. The single mom lived paycheck to paycheck along with $50 a week from her mother to feed her family.
    
She’s now the owner of Tap Pups , a 500-member tap dancing group with locations in Lemoyne, Harrisburg and Hershey, but the shelter tour hit home. “How did I not know how much these people need when I live so close?” she said.
    
With this need in mind, she and son Brian Riordan, 38, of New York City, started the 3R Project. They’ve raised more than $25,000 for the shelter from Tap Pups dance shows since 2006.
    
Rhonda Hendrickson, YWCA director of domestic violence intervention and prevention services, said victims are often so desperate to escape abuse that they leave home with nothing on their backs.
    
A Comfort Bundle, made up of a bath towel, washcloth, blanket, pillow and set of twin sheets, is something shelter residents can call their own. The 3R Project has put together about 600 bundles for shelter residents since 2009 with help from the community.
    
Anyone can help build a comfort bundle by going to Bed Bath & Beyond and purchasing items from a list available in the gift registry department. Bed Bath & Beyond will then ship the items to Tap Pups at no charge.

“It’s a heart-warming gift to give women and children as they leave to set up a new life,” Hendrickson said.
    
One woman, whose daughter stayed at the YWCA shelter, wrote a letter to Vicki Riordan that deeply moved her. "My daughter is opening the new set of sheets and can’t stop smelling them," she wrote. "It’s the first time she ever smelled new sheets."
    
Vicki Riordan said it feels incredible to help women after being a victim. When you go through domestic violence, she said, there’s no way you can comprehend that one day you can be doing well enough to help others.
