Back with a crash! boom! bang!

In the late 1980s, Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle were launched on the music map as Roxette and went on to become, in the 1990s, the most successful Swedish music export since Abba.

It all began with The Look, then Listen To Your Heart – catchy hit singles from the album Look Sharp! These global successes paved the way for a considerable track record – 33 singles and total record sales exceeding 75 million.

The group spent recent years in relative quiet, time in which blonde vocalist Fredriksson underwent and recovered from a brain tumour operation and each of the duo’s members pursued other interests – including solo albums and, for Gessle, successful solo art exhibitions.

But now the duo are back with a world tour – they included three South African concerts last month, having last toured here in 1995 – and also a comeback album, Charm School, which, if it has met with only a lukewarm critical reception, is selling well worldwide.

Over the years, Roxette have given us many great songs, perhaps most notably the ballad It Must Have Been Love, the theme from the Oscar-nominated film, Pretty Woman. In 2005, Fredriksson and Gessle picked up a special award for the four-millionth US airing of the song.

Among other successes were Joyride, How Do You Do?, Dangerous, Fading Like a Flower, Spending My Time, Sleeping In my Car and Crash! Boom! Bang!

Fredriksson and Gessle first met in the laid-back Swedish town of Halmstad in the late 1970s, but individual successes prevented them from uniting musically back then.

Gessle’s former power-pop group, Gyllene Tider, was – and, amazingly enough, still is – one of Sweden’s most-loved acts. Although defunct since 1985, their record-breaking 1996 and 2004 reunions still reverberate through Swedish show-business annals. Gessle’s impressive solo career gave her an equally solid platform.

But in 1986, she and Fredriksson were finally ready to merge their creative forces. The logic was simple: Per had the songs, Marie had the voice, and together they could go places.

Initially, however, they had planned only a one-off single, Neverending Love, under the name Roxette. It became a big summer hit in Sweden and led to further collaborations.
