Chiefs' Pope is Georgia boy's saving grace
In the panic of the moment, Leonard Pope was calm.

Pope, a Chiefs tight end, was at a pool party Saturday in Americus, Ga., when he heard Anne Moore screaming that her son was drowning. Bryson Moore, 6, had slipped into the deep end. Pope said he didn’t think about whether it was his responsibility, and he didn’t think about how he might be putting his own life in danger. He said there was no time to think much at all.

“I just reacted,” Pope, 27, said Tuesday. “I knew I could swim. I just had to get there. I wasn’t waiting around for no one else.”

When the 6-foot-7 Pope reached the pool, he saw the boy’s fingers outstretched and his head submerged in about six feet of water. Pope, fully clothed and carrying his wallet and cell phone in his pockets, jumped in and wrapped his arms around Bryson, pulling him from the pool and delivering the boy to his panicked mother.

“I just dove in and got him,” Pope said.

Three days later, Pope remembered the boy gasping for air and gagging. Someone tapped the boy on the back to help clear his airways. And while reporters and football fans were using words like “hero,” Pope said he was only acting on instinct.

“I heard that cry. Yelling like, ‘He’s drowning, like, someone get him,” he said. “When you hear that in a woman’s voice and she’s screaming for her child’s life, I didn’t think twice about it. That’s a kid.”

Pope said he has two children, ages 2 and 9, adding that he knew it could’ve been his son or daughter in the pool.

Recollecting on Saturday’s ordeal, Pope said he and his brother learned to swim when he was growing up in western Georgia. His mother made certain they were comfortable around water, and in time, Pope said, he earned a card from a local organization for learning to swim.

Attempts by The Star to reach Anne Moore on Tuesday were unsuccessful, but she told the Times-Recorder newspaper in Americus this week that she planned to enroll her son in swimming lessons after the shock of Saturday dissolved.

On Monday, Pope traveled to Kansas City to work out with several of his Chiefs teammates. Not only did he have to replace his waterlogged phone upon reaching Kansas City, but he also learned about the area’s painful history with another Chiefs player who tried to save drowning children.

Pope said that before this week, he had never heard the story of Joe Delaney, the 24-year-old star Chiefs running back who acted on instinct, too. Delaney couldn’t swim when, in June 1983, he jumped into a pond in Monroe, La., trying to save three children who had drifted too deep.

Delaney saved LeMarkits Holland, who was 10 at the time, but Delaney and the other two boys drowned. Delaney’s No. 37 jersey was unofficially retired, and his name was later added to the Ring of Honor at Arrowhead Stadium.

When Pope reached Kansas City, he began hearing pieces of the Joe Delaney story. He said he understood Delaney’s motives.

“It’s just a duty and a call,” Pope said. “It’s a split second.”

Quarterback Matt Cassel has gathered a group of teammates in Kansas City during this offseason’s owner-imposed NFL lockout to work on conditioning and football basics. Pope said he worked out with the group for a week last month, and he was planning to rejoin them Tuesday, today and Thursday for another round at an area high school.

Players are prohibited from working out at team facilities or speaking with coaches while representatives from the league and the NFL Players Association continue to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement. Free agents and draft picks can’t sign contracts. Pope, who has 30 catches and 150 yards in two seasons with the Chiefs, doesn’t have a contract for 2011. Under the expired CBA, Pope would be an unrestricted free agent when the new deal is in place, but that could change based on the negotiations’ outcome.

Pope, who also played for Chiefs coach Todd Haley while they were both in Arizona, said he has no doubt what he hopes will happen.

“I love Kansas City. I love the fans. I love the coaches,” Pope said. “Todd and his coaching staff, they’ve known me for a number of years, they know where my heart’s at. I really want to be here. I really want to be a Chief.”

Pope said he has been splitting time in Kansas City and Georgia, where he has been working with a trainer at Fort Benning, Ga., which is about an hour from Americus.

He said Tuesday that he was flattered by the attention he was receiving after he pulled young Bryson from the pool, but he added that he didn’t think his act was extraordinary.

Instead, he said it was simply necessary.

“I really didn’t think it was a big deal for me to get in,” he said. “It was just something I had to do.”

Back on the field
A collection of Chiefs players are gathering in KC this week to work out as a unit.
