Valley Press Club awards scholarships to aspiring journalists

SPRINGFIELD- Although journalism and the way we tell stories is changing, the art is far from dead.

That is the point Holyoke High School graduate Erin M. Corrigan intends to make as she embarks on an education in Journalism at Emerson College in Boston.

Corrigan was one of four young, aspiring journalists honored by the Valley Press Club with $1,000 scholarships on Saturday.

Corrigan's interest in the art of storytelling began with a guidance counselor who suggested that she work on the school newspaper.

"I always enjoyed writing and I love the idea of writing with a purpose," she told the press club. "It is up to our generation to bring journalism into the future and I want to be a part of that."

Corrigan's scholarship is named in honor of Al Jaffe, senior vice president of talent recruitment at ESPN as well as a 1964 recipient of a Valley Press Club scholarship.

Jaffe's scholarship was awarded after he had been accepted to Emerson College and his father passed away.

"Tuition at Emerson was $1,300 back then and without the club's financial support, I don't know if I would have been able to go to college and be here today," Jaffe said.

Southwick-Tolland Regional High School graduate Megen Navonne recently completed an internship at the Westfield Evening News. This scholarship recipient said that her experience on the job inspired her to choose communications as a major while she attends American International College in Springfield.

“Journalism is not only a job, it is a skill, and it is something that does not come easy,” Navonne told the club. “But I know that writing and reporting is something that I fell in love with those short five months.”

Brimfield resident and recent graduate of Tantasqua Regional High School Michelle M. Bourget was awarded a scholarship by WWLP in honor of Keith Silver, a news director who passed away in 2010.

Although Bourget was unable to attend the event on Saturday, she sent an essay detailing her thoughts and appreciation for the money.

Bourget, who has for the past two years worked as a volunteer videographer filming various town meetings and events, is attending Westfield State University as she pursues a future in broadcast journalism.

Kaitlyn Sullivan, an Ashley Falls resident who graduated from Mount Everett Regional High School, plans to pursue a communications degree at the Dominican University California Honors College.
