Former Athens resident to be named to Boys & Girls Hall of Fame; Stallings ...
Members of Boys & Girls Clubs of North Alabama believe their mission is to build strong communities and a stronger America. For more than 73 years, the organization has helped strengthen communities by providing a safe, positive and constructive place for kids. In turn, the Boys & Girls Club has produced the type of leaders the sixth U.S. president spoke of almost a century ago. The purpose of the event is to honor and induct club alumni into the Boys & Girls Clubs of North Alabama Hall of Fame. Induction into the Hall of Fame is the highest acknowledgement the organization can bestow to individuals who have gone on to make a major contribution to their respective fields and to their communities. Organizers of the event said the honorees embody and promote the values, ideals and character of the organization. Last years’ inaugural class included, Rex Reynolds, city administrator, City of Huntsville and former U.S. House of Representative Robert “Bud” Cramer.Becoming a leader
One of Athens own, April Houston Collins, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame as one of this year’s honorees. Collins, who was born in Rockford, Ill., and later moved to Athens, was raised by a single father and later became an active member of the Athens Boys & Girls Club. While at the club, she tutored younger children and took part in the Smart Moves Prevention Program and the Torch Club citizenship and leadership program. In 1995, Collins was named Athens Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year. As a youth leader, Collins represented the Club at different functions and engagements, including speaking to members of Athens City Council. Collins said being named Athens Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year inspired her and created a lifelong commitment and dedication to service. In 2007, she accepted an academic scholarship to Faulkner University’s Jones School of Law and continued to devote her time outside the classroom. She committed herself to serving others by participating in the school’s public interest program and was named a Public Interest Fellow. She was also a Campus Fellow for the SaveFirst Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program where she prepared income taxes for low-income families at no cost. During her tenure as a law student, she also became an active member of the Black Law Students Association and participated in the Thurgood Marshall Mock Trial Competition with a team that earned the title of Southeastern Regional Finalists. Collins said she feels truly honored to have been selected into this year’s Boys & Girls Club Alumni Hall of Fame. “I attended the Boys and Girls Club during a tough time in my childhood and it was the positive outlet I needed,” she said. “Mr. Williams, Ms. Rainey and the entire staff cared about us and they were sure to let us know that they believed in us. I look forward to sharing this momentous occasion with my family, friends and the North Alabama community.

Can’t find my SD map. No telling where it’s stashed.
This is the detour I know about, close to the ND line. http://apps.sd.gov/news/showDoc.aspx?i=13384
That detour added at least 40 miles. The thing is, though, that there were at least five places on the detour that I’ll bet are several inches underwater by now.
In fact, I’ll guess there are at least 20 places from Canada to Pierre that have water on the road by now. It’s really bad I’ll write more about it when I don’t have to post from the phone.
