Indigenous identity in the library

There has been a lot of interest over the past few years in family history.

For many Indigenous Australians this research is not just a hobby it is about "restoring their identity" says Townsville Libraries' Janeese Henaway.

Ms Henaway is the libraries' Indigenous Resource Officer and amongst her roles she assists locals to trace their family history using the Norman Tindale genealogy sheets.

"They are so adamant... in finding that one person, because that one person can link to the whole rest of the family, so it's a very big issue for Indigenous Australians because of what they have been through."

Ms Henaway is also working to increase Indigenous north Queenslanders' use of library resources.

"I do see a lot of different age groups come in, but it is not as more a percentage as the non-Indigenous."

"Sometimes I might have an older person within the Aboriginal community that comes in and they are pretty nervous, but when they see me come downstairs they are happy because they know they are comfortable with me".

In order to create library events that are engaging and comfortable for Indigenous participants, Ms Henaway has drawn on the expertise of community elders.

"A particular elder said to me 'why don't you try just starting off with a yarning circle, because it is more intimate' and I thought yeah..."

She is also determined to get young Indigenous people inspired about education.

"I want to change their mind set I want to let them see that there is opportunities for them being an Indigenous Australian, they can become doctors they can become nurses whatever they want whatever their dream is..."

Ms Henaway believes practical workshops will engage Indigenous youths and utilise their cultural strengths.

"Sometimes they can't take too much, listen to too much, but they are very hands on, they are very practical with their hands I can tell you that".

A Pizza and Paint workshop for young library users will be held on the 5th of July at the Thuringowa Library, from 5 - 7pm.

You can click on the part of the image that you want the magnification to center on. This will not affect the actual image in any way, just how it appears on your screen. Once you zoom in, the magnifying glass will automatically switch back to whatever tool you were using before.
