Bachmann's Old Church Holds Anti-Catholic Views—Why Isn't This Hurting Her ...
In a country with 70 million Catholics, belonging to a church that believes that the pope is the Antichrist appears as an aspiring Presidential lliability for all. But the revelation last week that Representative Michele Bachmann (R-MN) belonged to a church affiliated with the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) until she resigned his membership last year does not seem not have had much impact yet. WELS said in his doctrinal statement on the anti-Christ "it is Scripture which reveals that the papacy is the Antichrist.” (In essence, WELS sticks carefully to Martin Luther’s teachings and interprets the notion that the Pope is God’s voice in the world as an Antichrist-like attempt to assume the place of Christ.)

Wright wasn’t anti-Catholic, so his statements weren’t in the Catholic League’s purview.But the Catholic League is not really a Catholic civil rights organization, is a politically conservative group that seems to exist mainly to obtain Donohue on Fox News where he can make war for Christmas and other battles ridiculous. From this perspective, Donohue's statement should be seen for what it is: a politically hackish attempt to point out that Obama was a radical black pastor who could make them uncomfortable.Donohue is faithfully play its role in the alliance that developed between Catholic and Protestant conservatives. While they once viewed each other with suspicion, in recent years the groups have cooperated over opposition to abortion rights and gay rights. And no one outdoes Bachmann when it comes to opposition to gay rights.
