Gone, and nearly forgotten

Radford's Central Cemetery, the oldest in the city, has become overgrown from a lack of attention. "There's nobody doing it, so I thought something needed to be done," said Lynn Wright, a Radford resident who along with husband Randy has started cleaning up the land.

RADFORD -- With waist-high weeds, tombstones broken and lost among the plants and memorial flowers scattered, the Central Cemetery doesn't look like one of the oldest historic sites in the city.
It's said to be the oldest cemetery in Radford, with more than 400 buried there, from Civil War soldiers to early city residents.
"It's a beautiful place, but you wouldn't know that from how it looks now," said Radford resident Lynn Wright.
So she and husband Randy Wright plan to clean the cemetery Friday and Saturday, and are asking for the community's help.
Lynn Wright said she first realized the cemetery was going mostly uncared for when her grandson came back from a bicycle ride and described grass three and four feet high growing in the cemetery.
After a trip to the cemetery to see it herself, Wright began making calls around the city to find the property's owner. She has numerous family members buried there, including her mother, so she wanted to see something done.
"There's nobody doing it, so I thought something needed to be done," she said.
Like many older cemeteries in the area, ownership has been lost over the years. There is no owner or address listed for the Central Cemetery in city records. Cemeteries are not taxed, so there are no tax records, either. According to local history, the Roberts family was said to have owned the land, but Wright -- a descendant of the Roberts family -- said they have no deed.
It's also tricky to define ownership of a cemetery, which is considered hallowed ground, said April Danner, founder of the Montgomery County Cemetery Project. Danner has given tours of Central Cemetery as part of the Civil War sesquicentennial celebrations; her group has not been involved in cleanup efforts.
"There are soldiers and many of the people who made Radford, Radford, buried there," she said.

When I talk about positive living and removing barriers what do you see in your mind picture? Do you see a crane loading up a concrete barrier or do you see yourself cleaning off a desk that is so full of papers you feel disorganized? When I talk about creating the life you want do you see others taking care of it as if they were the contractors and your life depends upon them? Or do you see yourself building a personal bird house - side by side, top, how you will hang it, the size of the hole to get through, and the type of nails to use? To many times we guess at what we mean personally. We may speak in non-concrete or abstract language about what we want and how we are going to get there. Do you catch yourself saying "when I retire I want to be happy" or "I want enough money to live on so I can quit my job".
