Treasure Coast Fishing Report: June 20

Action off the Sebastian Inlet is picking up, according to reports from Native Tackle Supply. The dolphin bite has been red-hot with good-sized fish as shallow as 80 feet. Most are hitting single-rigged, trolled ballyhoo on a monofilament leader. There have also been a lot of sailfish releases lately. Warm water seems to be moving back onto the reefs, and so are the fish. The grouper and snapper bite is finally getting to where it should be for this time of year. Gag grouper, mutton and mangrove snapper are on the shallow water reefs in good numbers.

St. Lucie County

Queen's Cove, Harbor Branch and the west shoreline of the Indian River south of Fort Pierce are all excellent spots to catch trout. Capt. Charlie Conner of Fish Tales Charters says D.O.A. shrimp or CAL jerk baits, along with live shrimp fished under a popping cork, will all catch a trout these days. The best action has been in 2 to 5 feet of water and often along the edges of the grass flats. Look for redfish hanging under area docks and on the flats. Snook are hanging under docks with the deepest water. Sheepshead and mangrove snapper are both holding under area bridges.

Martin County

Anglers fishing off the St. Lucie Inlet are finding plenty of dolphin, with many tipping the scales between 25 and 30 pounds. This time of year, many anglers troll a smaller ballyhoo rigged with one hook on a monofilament leader. Action starts at about 75 feet, but dolphin have been reported out to 250 feet. Weed lines and current rips continue to produce fish. Sailfish are also biting both live and dead baits. Anglers fishing the North Fork of the St. Lucie River are catching a variety of fish, including croaker, snapper, tarpon, sheepshead, trout and ladyfish. With salinity levels high, more and more fish are working their way into backwaters.

Lake Okeechobee

Capt. Larry Wright at Garrard's Bait and Tackle continues to report good numbers of bass being caught, with only a few big ones here and there. The lake level has stabilized for the moment at 9.64 feet. Wright says action is coming on both live and artificial baits. Use a Senko or 10-inch Gambler worm in June bug or Christmas fished around the grasses, and in some cases bass can be found feeding 500 yards from the grass beds off Tin House Cove. Conner also warns anglers to shut down and idle in from 1,000 yards off the grass, both for safety and to be able to see the feeding bass. The Kissimmee River is full of bluegill beds made ahead of the moon. Bluegill are also being caught at Indian Prairie, Harney Pond and Observation Shoal.
